(in English) The connection between sound and meaning is generally regarded as arbitrary in language. However, there are cases where specific sounds are linked with particular meanings, and this phenomenon is called sound symbolism. Previous studies have used orthographic stimuli for experiments, but orthographic stimuli might be received differently due to the influence of the mother tongue. This study focuses on the English language and conducts auditory tasks to explore whether English long vowels and voiced or voiceless consonants are synaesthetically connected to size judgments for native speakers of British English and Japanese. Results show language-specific effects in contrast to previous studies, indicating that factors such as tongue position and vowel openness influence size judgments differently based on language.
