Applications of airborne ultrasound have been spreading recently for the purpose of sensing such as short-range SONAR for vehicles and drones as well as actuations such as haptic devices and noncontact manipulation of small objects. In this report, we present a trial to detect airborne ultrasound through the modulation of refractive index of air with the use of a Sagnac interferometer of the minimum configuration. First, a theoretical consideration is presented on the working principle, and then, experimental demonstrations are made to measure 26 kHz ultrasounds using fiber delay coils of 100-1000 m. Methods to measure the sound pressure level are discussed. |
