Recently, there have been many reports on sub-THz transmitters (TX) and receivers (RX) for high-speed wireless communications, including chip-level TX and RX designs and their modularization including antenna integration. However, there are few reports on beam steering in the sub-THz band above 200 GHz. In this study, we present a two-dimensional beam-steerable CMOS RX module operating in the 252-285 GHz range. The module consists of a 1-D phased-array for horizontal beam steering and a motorized planar cylindrical lens for mechanical vertical beam steering. In experiments with 2D beam steering, a data rate of 25.8 Gb/s and a scan range of 28 degrees were achieved with QPSK modulation. |
