Robot System for Supporting Moderate Relationship between Family Members

(in English) Parents and children who live far apart have communication problems such as “they are worry about the other person but don’t have a reason to contact them”, “they don’t know when to contact each other”, and “they’re too busy with their own lives to contact each other”. In order to realize casual communication between remote locations, we developed a pair-type robot that can communicate by sending a minimum amount of information. An experiment for approximately one-week with 10 pairs of parents and children showed that the robot could be used as a means of communication between remote locations, and that communication through the robot could help parents and children feel sense of connection with each other and improve their relationship.
