A Study of Complementary Recommendation Focused on Functional Aspects

(in English) Complementary recommendation is a task of recommending items that should be purchased together with an item. In previous studies, because of the high cost of creating ground truth labels that imply complementary relationships between items, labels based on user browsing and purchase history have been used instead. However, real-world behavioral data contains a lot of noise due to irregular events, and these may not be recommended and evaluated according to the original definition of complementary. This study redefines complementary labels that focus on the functional aspect of the item and are independent of the user's behavioral data. To evaluate the quality of labels, we collected annotated labels and conducted experiments to evaluate label classification using a decision tree-based model. Experimental results confirmed a label classification accuracy of over 85%, and the proposed labels provided practical complementary recommendations. Additionally, observations of the features contributing to label classification suggest that features that describe products in more detail are necessary to determine complementation relationships.
