[Encouragement Talk] A real-time 3D video transmission and display system for drone holoportation applications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) "Drone Holoportation," which we define as a technology where unmanned aerial vehicles transmit three-dimensional imagery in real-time for remote investigation and exploration in areas inaccessible to humans, is expected to bring significant benefits to society. However, such attempts have not yet been made. To realize this, new requirements must be met in addition to the existing ones (high video quality, low latency). These include the compactness and low power consumption of the transmission server, operation under different communication qualities, and easy setup of display devices according to varying use cases. In this study, we implement a three-dimensional video transmission and display system to be mounted on the industrial drone. In the system we propose, the transmission system mounted on the drone consists of a small PC (Jetson Nano) and a 3D sensor, and after appropriate depth value conversion, hardware encoding of RGBD images is performed. On the web browser of the receiving device, frames transmitted under WebRTC are converted to meshes and displayed with low latency. We show that our palm-sized transmission system operates with about 13W of power consumption and meets the other requirements. Furthermore, we discuss the utilization of 5G sidelink to expand the coverage of our system.
