The Effects of Aging on Audio-visual Integration in Motion Perception

(in English) This study investigated the multimodal integration in audio-visual motion perception among both young and older adults. In this experiment, participants were asked to discriminate auditory motion direction. Three experimental conditions were established: congruent, incongruent, and audio-only. In congruent conditions, the auditory motion direction coincided with that of the random dot kinematogram. In incongruent conditions, auditory stimuli moved in the direction opposite to the visual motion. In audio-only conditions, visual stimuli were not presented. Signal-to-noise ratio thresholds for auditory motion discrimination in each condition were estimated by employing the QUEST method. We found that signal-to-noise ratio thresholds were lower in the congruent condition compared to the incongruent condition, irrespective of age. These findings suggest that aging does not affect the multimodal integration in audio-visual motion perception.
