Technologies that enable the reproduction of highly realistic 3D audio fields are becoming increasingly important due to the recent proliferation of Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR) applications. In order to transmit and reproduce 3D audio signals efficiently, it is crucial to understand the acceptable amount of delay in reproduced signals from headphones when a listener moves their head. We conducted a comparison between audio signals played back through loudspeakers simulating a smooth update of Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) and those simulating a delayed HRTF update. The test results show that the allowable delay time ranges from about 100 to 500 ms, depending on the bandwidth and azimuth of the signals. The movement speed of the audio signals did not affect the results. |
