A Study of MPQUIC Packet Scheduler Based on Unacknowledged Time for Remote Monitoring of Autonomous Driving

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The realization of autonomous driving is awaited. In Japan, driverless autonomous driving on public roads is finally approved under some conditions such as real-time remote monitoring. However, in the current mobile networks, it is difficult to provide stable remote monitoring with a single line due to the lack of uplink bandwidth and fluctuations in radio quality. Although using multiple lines with MPQUIC is expected to improve the stability of remote monitoring, it may worsen video latency and noise due to packet latency and loss caused by the reordering of packet arrival between lines. Conventional packet scheduling algorithms select transmission lines based on SRTT and congestion window. These metrics cannot immediately detect sudden quality degradations that occurs in the mobile networks. In this paper, we propose a novel packet scheduling algorithm that can avoid sudden quality degradations by determining the transmission lines based on the elapsed time since the packet was sent. We implemented the proposed method and evaluated it in a virtual network to simulate delay and bandwidth fluctuations. The evaluation results showed that the proposed method reduces the transmission delay of video frames compared to the conventional methods. Also, we evaluated our method on the actual mobile networks and showed that it can reduce delay frames of 500 ms or more by at least 90% compared to the conventional method.
