Deep Learning based Objective Microscopic Agglutination Test

(in English) This paper aims to achieve objective justification of decision criteria in Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT), which is the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of leptospirosis. To this purpose, we propose an agglutination rate estimation method based on object detection. The method counts the number of bacteria appearing on images and also extracts shape of each bacteria by utilizing a deep learning instance segmentation on images and computes the agglutination rate from the counts. Showing the counts as well as segmentation result visually, laboratory technicians can intuitively understand how well the detection works and the reliability of the computed agglutination rate. We report the experimental result both quantitatively and qualitatively and introduce feedback from experts.
