| 抄録 | （和） | This study explores pauses in conversations, aiming to understand their complexity by analyzing how often they occur and their patterns in the flow of discourse among L2 speakers of different proficiency levels. In contrast to common belief, the study challenges the notion that beginners consistently have longer pauses, emphasizing the influence of specific conversational contexts on L2 speakers' pause patterns. Specific conversational contexts of this paper mean a task-based conversation involving an L2 instructor and a builder collaboratively constructing Lego blocks in visible and hidden workspace conditions. Analyzing pauses using Audacity, the study examines the relationship between Japanese English learners' proficiency, frequency of pauses. The study also qualitatively analyzes question-answer sequences, where a builder starts to ask questions to confirm or check their understanding. The results show that intermediate and advanced L2 instructors had longer pauses in hidden workspace conditions, indicating requiring additional time to process information and formulate responses in the target language when compared to native English speakers. In visible workspace conditions, there is no statistical differences between L2 learners and native English speakers. This partial discrepancy between common belief and our results may be attributed to the proactive behavior of L2 learners who actively and jointly participate in the tasks. |
