Two opposing motor skills, which normally prevent learning due to a memory interference, can be acquired when each is associated with the external-world or body states (context-dependent motor learning). While much research has intensively examined what states can reduce the interference, it has remained unclear how multiple memories acquired simultaneously relate to each other. Here we focused on the segregation and integration of multiple memories, and examined such structure using the visuomotor rotation paradigm. In the experiment, arm-reaching movements were classified into four trial-types with respect to the spatial combination of visual targets and gaze positions. Participants experienced opposing rotational perturbations (CW or CCW) on each trial-type. After learning, we de-adapted only one trial type, and subsequently examined the effect of this de-adaptation on the remaining other trial types. In this task design, if de-adaptation of one memory leads to de-adaptation of the other memory, these two memories are considered to be linked. Preliminary experiments revealed relatively complex patterns of memory structure, contrary to expectations based on task-optimal strategies. |
