The V4 field in the ventral visual pathway is situated as an intermediary region processing visual information crucial for object recognition. It plays a pivotal role in amalgamating low-level visual cues and constructing object representations. However, the specific mechanisms driving intermediate-level processing in the V4 field remain elusive. In this study, we developed a model aimed at replicating cellular responses in Monkey V4 to natural images and conducted an analysis of the fidelity of feature selectivity, particularly focusing on several contour attributes believed to be encoded by V4 cells. We paid special attention to task differences, considering classification using AlexNet and segmentation using FCN-AlexNet. Specifically, we crafted an encoding model to forecast actual cellular responses by extracting signals from intermediate layers corresponding to the V4 field. Both models exhibited a consistent level of generalization performance and effectively replicated cellular selectivity towards contour features, with the extent of replication showing no dependence on the model's task. |
