[Invited Talk] Provision of Reasonable Accommodations for Researchers with or Suspected of having Developmental Disorders at Academic and Research Conferences
Tomonori Karita, Jun Konno (Ehime University) WIT2023-49
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Developmental disorders encompass a diverse range of symptoms and conditions, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Learning Disorders (SLD, including Dyslexia/Dysgraphia), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and High Sensory Processing sensitivity (HSP). According to a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number of diagnosed cases of developmental disabilities has been increasing yearly, with 481,000 diagnoses reported in 2016. Moreover, the number of children with or are suspected of having developmental disorders is also increasing. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology reported that as of 2022, approximately 8.8% of students enrolled in regular school classes may have developmental disorders. On the other hand, individuals with or are suspected of having developmental disorders often do not exhibit overall intellectual developmental issues and may demonstrate exceptionally high abilities in areas of personal interest or specific domains. A number of researchers with distinguished accomplishments in the past could potentially be diagnosed with developmental disorders under current diagnostic standards. Thus, there is a significant correlation between the field of research and academic and developmental disorders, with an higher rate of involvement than in the compulsory education stage. This lecture, based upon the published article [1] by the authors, will provide an overview and examples of the considerations for researchers with or without developmental disorders to effectively participate in academic conferences and research meetings and to publish their research findings.
