| （英） | This study investigated a role of orthography in morpho-orthographic decomposition in the early stage of processing visually presented morphologically complex words through masked priming tasks conducted by the remote mode of DmDX an application for psychological experiments. Stimuli words were Japanese deadjectival nouns comprised by the root of adjectives with English origin, and the nominalizing suffix sa, e.g., sohutosa ‘softness’. Since previous studies have suggested that orthography modulates morpho-orthographic decomposition, we manipulated the typicality of script for word roots and affixes to investigate the role of orthography in roots and suffixes through four experiments. Approximately thirty native Japanese speakers participated in each experiment. We found full priming effects when roots and the affix were written in typical scripts, partial priming effects when roots were in typical script and the affix was in atypical script, and when roots were in atypical script and the affix was in typical script, and no priming effect was observed when the roots and the affix were written in atypical script. The results indicate the importance of orthography in word roots and suffixes. | |
