How do we make use of 'non-structural' cues, such as pragmatics and prosody, in L1 sentence comprehension, and can L2 perceivers access them? In Koizumi’s (2009) L1 self-paced reading study on the ‘not-because’ scope ambiguity (e.g., Sarah didn’t cry because she was in public / because she was lonely), the strong 'dispreference' for the low-attachment biased items was 'neutralized' when presented under the if-clause, which indicated that the difficulty in processing the low-attachment interpretation is due to non-structural factors such as prosody and pragmatics. Now, are such cues available to L2 perceivers, or can they learn to access them? Following Koizumi and Shoji's (2019) experiment on beginner-level L2 perceivers with easier materials and a short training session, the experiment we presently report is yet another attempt to 'train' beginner-level L2 learners with an extended and interactive training session but still the effect of if-clause neutralization was not evident. |
