Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are wireless networks that transmit and receive data via communication devices installed in the air, including outer space, such as satellites, drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, and balloons, without relying on terrestrial communication systems. Satellite communication stations can provide communication links to user ground stations located in a wide area of about 1/3 of the Earth's surface, and have been in practical use for a long time. In June 2022, the 3GPP (Third generation partnership project) released the specifications for the first fifth-generation mobile communications system (5G) using satellite communications, establishing a direct link between terrestrial user terminals and satellites. With this specification of 5G and the construction of a near-earth communications network using many low-earth orbit satellites, called as a “satellite constellation,” NTNs have attracted much attention in recent years. NTNs enable the construction of organic space networks with base and relay stations in the sky, and are expected to create a variety of new use-cases. The use of high-frequency radio and optical waves can alleviate the interference problem caused by horizontally and vertically interconnected wireless transmissions, in addition to increasing the capacity. This study provides an overview of such non-terrestrial networks, introduces the use of optical data relay satellites, which are promising for the realization of future space networks, and discusses the prospects for space network utilization in 6G. |
