A Study on Analyzing Spatial Features for Real-time Importance Estimation in 3D Point Cloud

(in English) For future smart cities, it is anticipated that city services will be provided continuously, comprehensively, and in real-time through urban digital twins.
To achieve these digital twin-based services, city-scale point cloud data is expected to be collected and utilized for various AI tasks. However, the use of such large-scale point cloud data for AI tasks incurs significant communication and computational costs for data processing. To address this challenge, several methods have been proposed to estimate the importance of different parts within a point cloud frame which contribute to an AI task. If importance estimations are effectively performed in real-time, the consumption of communication and computational resources can be optimized by prioritizing important areas and eliminating less significant ones. Therefore, we propose a real-time importance estimation method based on the difference in spatial features between frames and investigate the appropriate spatial features for the estimation. The proposed method quantitatively estimates the importance for each voxel based on the difference in a spatial feature between past and current frames. In addition, we conduct experiments using an actual device and analyze both the estimation results and real-time performances when applying various spatial features with the proposed method.
