Full polarimetric SAR, which requires two types of transmitted polarization, provides detailed polarization information on scattered signals. However, it has the problem that the observation width is limited to about half that of SAR with single-polarization transmission. As a result, observation opportunities are very limited.
Dual-pol SAR is a system that transmits in one polarization and receives in two polarizations, and it is possible to acquire polarization information without being restricted by the observation width.
As represented by the Sentinel-1 satellite, dual-pol SAR data is provided at high frequency, and its application in the agricultural field is progressing.
This research estimates the NDVI, an optical index that expresses the activity level of vegetation, from dual-pol SAR data.
In this study, we show that when using machine learning to automatically extract features, it is necessary and sufficient to add the Stokes vector itself as input, rather than the conventional polarization parameters.
In addition, we clarify the contribution of the $g_2$ and $g_3$ components of the Stokes vector to NDVI estimation, which are not included in the products widely used in remote sensing applications.
As a result, it is hoped that more accurate vegetation monitoring methods will be established for agricultural applications using dual-pol SAR data. |
