Development of an English Reading-aloud System to Support Japanese Children with Dyslexia

(in English) Dyslexia is a learning disability that causes difficulties in reading and writing despite having no issues with intellectual or basic perceptual abilities, affecting an estimated 5-20% of the world’s population. This study proposes and develops a learning support system aimed at Japanese dyslexic children struggling with reading English. The system provides functionalities that allow learners to repeatedly listen to their own voice and visualize disfluency and pronunciation errors through graphs, enabling them to consciously recognize fluent and accurate reading. A three-week reading practice experiment was conducted, and the effectiveness of the system in improving participants' reading abilities was evaluated using pre- and post-tests. The results showed no improvement in fluency, but a noticeable enhancement in accuracy of word reading was observed.
