Biological visual systems efficiently extract behaviorally relevant features from the incoming light, even within the constraints of limited hardware resources. This study presents a novel vision system inspired by the central and peripheral visual processing mechanisms of the biological retina. The proposed system, implemented in digital hardware, extracts features from visual input with distinct spatiotemporal resolutions by employing spatiotemporal filters specialized for the central and peripheral regions of the 2D image plane, along with spike encoding processes. Step response experiments with a checkerboard stimulus demonstrated that the system's central region exhibited sustained responses to fine spatial details, whereas the peripheral region showed transient responses to coarser structures. |
