Analysis of Road Traffic Congestion by Applying Queueing Theory

(in English) Conventional queuing models ignore the time spent moving within the waiting room, but in road traffic congestion, the time that vehicles spend moving the small distance within the congestion, which corresponds to the time spent moving within the waiting room, cannot be ignored. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to model road traffic congestion using a queuing model without a waiting room, in which the queues are arranged in series. Simulation evaluation showed that the length of the congestion is more susceptible to the individual differences in how far vehicles move within the congestion than the variability in the arrival intervals of cars. Furthermore, a comparison with actual data showed that the congestion can be approximated by a model in which there is almost no variability in speed or arrival intervals from the front to the end of the congestion.
