Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In programming exercises, learners progress through coding impasses and find solutions to successfully complete a given task. In order for instructors to provide accurate guidance and advice to learners facing impasses, it is important to understand each learner’s progress. However, time and human resource constraints impose certain limitations. In this research, we focus on the learners’ exploration process during coding, such as writing and erasing and aim to develop a method to automatically estimate impasse factors based on the analysis of the exploration. This paper describes a method for dividing learners’ source code into blocks using abstract syntax trees and mapping blocks between adjacent compile-time source codes. We also describe a method for extracting learners’ traces of exploration from the editing history of the mapped and estimating impasse factors based on the analysis of these traces and their tendencies of occurrence. Furthermore, we provide an overview of the support for grasping impasses through the system’s interface that implements these methods. Our methods enable to estimate the kinds of impasses that could not be handled by existing methods.
