| 抄録 | （和） | 1975年から1981年にかけて筆者が Charles L. Harness (1915 - 2005) のThe Ring of Ritornel (1968) を断続的に半ばまで翻訳し、1980年代に残りを追加しつつすでに翻訳した部分も見直して訳稿を作成したが、諸般の事情から刊行されないままとなっていた。訳稿のコピーが手元にあり、科研費基盤研究(C)：課題番号21K00744『高度翻訳知識に基づく翻訳文法の構築に関する研究』の研究活動の一部として文字起こしなどの整理を行った。 SF（空想科学小説）・ファンタジー（幻想小説）など、現実世界・我々が当然のように想定する日常の世界とは異なる架空の世界を基盤とする物語・小説においては、その背景をどのように言語的に描出しているかが作品理解の重要な前提となる。ジャンルがまだ成熟していない段階では、物語が始まる前にその世界の概略を解説するような手法も見られるが、ジャンルが成熟し作品が蓄積されると非日常世界の事物を示す特有の名称が使われるようになり、その世界の概略を解説することなく物語が始まるようになっていく。とはいえ、個々の作家の作品群・個別の作品はそれぞれ独自の世界を前提としているため、その背景を示す何らかの工夫が必要となる。 ここでは、小説の登場人物名・事物の名称などが織りなす象徴性が物語の世界を描き出す事例を紹介する。 |
| （英） | The present author attempted translation of a Sci-Fi novel The Ring of Ritornel (1968) by Charles L. Harness (1915 - 2005) from 1975 until 1981 halfway through and revised and completed the whole translation in the middle 1980s, which, for various reasons, never got published. A complete set of the hand-written manuscript and other related materials survived and as part of KAKEN project 21K00744, all parts were typed out and partially annotated. This novel is sprinkled with various symbolic pieces of religious or mystic nomenclature. What does dice in the shape of dodecahedron might signify and/or suggest? Why are atomic bomb explosions depicted as punishment against horrible crimes against inter-galactic civilization? Why is the bar that the main character used to frequent named the “winged centaur”? These apparently minor but puzzling details are integrated to compose important backgrounds for the imagined world established in this Science Fiction novel. If a translator tries to recapitulate those symbolisms and to be faithful with the original ideas and world view of the author, he or she has to understand these backgrounds before they try to start their translation, but a lot can only be understood after the translation process is more than half finished. |
