| （英） | This study investigates the grammaticalization process of the second-person plural pronoun y’all, emphasizing its communicative and grammatical functions. Y’all has developed into a distinct pronoun with unique features. Utilizing 100 examples taken from the website YouGlish, this study categorizes y’all into four grammatical categories: subject, object, vocative, and possessive. Y’all is most frequently used as a subject, and found in both main and subordinate clauses. Y’all in main clause can reflect the speaker’s intent, and the function changes flexibly. Subject y’all used with prepositions can specify the smaller group within the larger group. Object y’all is frequently preceded by prepositions and functions to clarify a group of people. Vocative y’all fulfills two communicative function: fostering involvement in initial and final positions, and attention-getting in medial positions. Possessive y’all (spelled y’alls) is used sparingly but conveys politeness, empathy, and inclusivity to the interlocutors. Using y’all in fixed expressions further highlight the grammaticalization of y’all, showing its semantic and functional versatility. The results indicate that y’all is a grammaticalized form undergoing further evolution in spoken English. This study concludes that y’all provides valuable insights into the processes of language change, specifically in the role of non-standard forms, in shaping modern English. | |
