| （英） | This research aims to analyze sentence structures and discourse in the Japanese English proficiency test known as Eiken, with a focus on the role of grammatical knowledge in listening comprehension—particularly the use of subjects and verbs in sentence construction. I hypothesize that understanding the variation of word expressions enables learners to grasp the topic of a text and develop effective listening skills. By examining the relationships between subjects and verbs in the text, I demonstrate how learners can engage with the narrative flow more effectively. Through three analyses, it becomes evident that the theme of the text, locusts, includes variations of nouns that highlight the contrast between the insects and the people who have dealt with them. Once the entity locusts is established as the topic, pronouns them and reduced noun forms are utilized. Interestingly, however, the nouns become more complex again toward the end of the text, introducing new information to emphasize the scientific discovery associated with them. Additionally, shifts in verb tense between the present and past indicate the progression of the narrative. These analyses illustrate how the topic is developed into an informative text and provide insights into listening effectively by focusing on grammar and discourse. |
