The role of sensors in autonomous vehicles is becoming increasingly critical, as sensor failures are directly linked to safety crisis. While LiDAR and camera systems show significant performance degradation under adverse weather conditions, mmWave radar sensors have emerged as a reliable alternative due to their robustness. However, extracting meaningful information from mmWave radar data requires substantial signal processing. When equipped with MIMO radar, mmWave sensors can provide high-resolution outputs, but at a high computational cost. Given that vehicle sensors typically operate on embedded systems, this latency challenges real-time performance and safety.
To address this, we propose a latent encoder-decoder-based method for the fast transformation of MIMO mmWave radar data into super-resolution Range-Angle (RA) maps. Our approach significantly reduces the need for traditional signal processing. We adopt a percentile-weighted loss to emphasize target signals during training, leading to more effective encoding. Initial experiments on object detection show promising results, though limitations remain in capturing fine-grained spatial and semantic details. Future work will focus on incorporating Doppler-domain information and preserving vehicle-specific patterns to improve detection accuracy and robustness. |
