Design and Implementation of IP Racing Drones using 5G Networks

(in English) Drone racing is a competition in which pilots race around a course while watching First-Person-View (FPV) footage streamed from cameras mounted on their drones; because speeds exceed 150,km/h, ultra-low-latency video transmission and control are essential. Conventional IP-based video-link and control schemes used for general-purpose drones have therefore been unsuitable for racing drones.

In this study, we designed and implemented a lightweight drone-control protocol that allows racing drones to fly over a 5G network, and we carried out flight tests beyond both radio line-of-sight and visual line-of-sight. We also analyzed and measured the constituent sources of latency typical of racing drones. The delay from stick input to the onset of motor current in our IP control system was 13.87,ms, close to the 11.41,ms of a conventional racing drone. The glass-to-glass latency of IP video transmission was 53.2,ms, giving a combined control-plus-video latency of 64.6,ms.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case in which both control and video were transmitted over IP via a 5G network—and manual drone operation relying solely on angular-rate attitude control was successfully demonstrated—under beyond-radio-line-of-sight and beyond-visual-line-of-sight conditions.
