Classification of Nationality of Three Asian Countries by Face Image

(in English) In this study, we used face images of people from three countries (Japan, China, and Korea) and performed nationality classification by transfer learning on three pre-trained networks (ResNet-101, AlexNet, and VGG-19), taking age and gender into account. As a result, ResNet-101 achieved a high accuracy of 86.9%. In addition, assuming that hairstyles have characteristics for each nationality, which has not been focused on in previous studies, we conducted nationality classification by training each facial part, visualization using Grad-CAM, and analysis using PCA (Principal Component Analysis). These experiments and analyses showed that the accuracy of nationality classification based on hair style alone was quite close to that based on eyes and mouth alone, suggesting that hair style is as important as facial parts, such as eyes and mouth, in nationality classification.
