A Text Alignment System for Natural Reading Order in Complex Layout Documents

(in English) OCR technology has made remarkable progress in recent years, achieving very high recognition accuracy at the character and word levels. However, there has been little research on technologies for properly aligning strings in documents with complex layouts, such as newspapers and academic papers. In this study, we developed a system that classifies strings into components based on the coordinate information of characters output by Google Cloud Vision AI and aligns them in the order that humans naturally read. We evaluated the system using 100 newspaper articles, calculating both the overall text alignment accuracy and the component classification accuracy. The results showed that our system can align with higher accuracy than Vision AI when limited to articles with low alignment accuracy. We identified misrecognition by Vision AI and the presence of layouts that cannot be determined solely from character coordinate information as causes of low accuracy.
