Emergence of Normative Behavior among Agents with Action Cost

(in English) Humans consider not only their own interests but also norm compliance in everyday decision-making and action selection.Here, norms are defined as non-innate mental representations accumulated in the brain through learning, and among them, those that are not centrally imposed but arise from interactions among agents in a given context are defined as social norms. Social norms are known to promote cooperative behavior in situations that require behavioral coordination with others, such as avoiding collisions. With the recent development of artificial intelligence technologies, increasing attention has been paid to the design of cooperative agents that take interactions with others into account. However, existing models assign rewards directly to cooperative behavior, making it difficult to capture the emergence of cooperation that runs counter to individual rationality. In this study, we aim to elucidate the process of normative behavior emergence by considering action costs from an information-theoretic perspective. The experimental results demonstrated that normative behavior was difficult to emerge under conventional model-based reinforcement learning models. On the other hand, while the proposed model increased the difficulty of learning, its effectiveness has yet to be verified.
