Optimizing Parallelism for High-Speed File Transfers based on Transaction Latency
Rin Suzuki, Ryo Nakamura (UTokyo) IA2025-38
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Efficient transfer of large files is often achieved through multiple connections; however, the optimal number of connections varies depending on the network environments and host resources. Existing approaches typically employ a fixed adjustment interval (e.g., 3–5 seconds), which may delay convergence to peak throughput or cause instability. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel method that dynamically determines the adjustment interval by monitoring transaction-level latency during Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) operations. The proposed algorithm adaptively updates the number of connections based on observed latency and throughput gradients, enabling faster convergence to the peak throughput. Experimental evaluations in both local and long-distance environments (Tokyo–Singapore and Tokyo–Sydney, Microsoft Azure) demonstrate that our method significantly shortens the time to reach peak throughput compared with existing approaches. In particular, it achieved up to 2.2× faster transfer in the local environment and up to 1.5× faster performance in wide-area environments. These results confirm the effectiveness of latency-based adaptive connection control for accelerating large-scale file transfers across diverse environments.
