[Short Paper] Development of Wi-Fi Roaming Technology for Remote Control of Construction Machinery

(in English) In recent years, remote control of construction machinery has become increasingly practical in order to save labor and improve efficiency, as well as for use in dangerous work sites. Wireless networks are necessary even in construction sites where mobile phone coverage is not available. Furthermore, to remotely control construction machinery safely and without stress, a wireless network must have sufficient bandwidth for image transmission and low latency to allow for seamless operation. Wi-Fi are equipped with a roaming function, but it is a simple method of connecting to a base station with strong received power for the terminal. In addition, roaming takes time because the terminal authentication process must be performed every time the base station is switched. To solve these issues with remote control of construction machinery, we are conducting research into roaming technology suitable for construction sites, which allows for quick connection to an appropriate base station. We confirmed that it is possible to determine the optimal connection destination by observing many parameters that are useful for switching base stations. We also confirmed that roaming time can be significantly reduced by maintaining links with multiple base stations. Furthermore, we are implementing this technology in a remotely controlled transport robot and are currently evaluating developed systems. We will report on the status of our research.
