Development of Learning Materials for Shadowing Sign Language using HMD

(in English) The elements constituting sign language are manual gestures and non-manual signals. Manual gestures are expressed through hand shapes, presentation locations, palm orientation, and overall movement. Non-manual signals—actions other than hands or fingers, such as head movements, eyebrow raises/lowerings, gaze direction, and upper body orientation—often distinguish grammatical differences.
This study proposes a system that incorporates dialogue data from the multi-purpose Japanese Sign Language database (KoSign) into Meta Quest 3 to enable shadowing learning, aiming to support the acquisition of natural non-manual signals used by deaf individuals in sign language conversations.
Features supporting shadowing learning, such as speed adjustment and model layout changes, were added and evaluated through user testing.
The results of the user tests revealed differing usage tendencies and feature requests between deaf individuals and sign language learners.
