In this study, we added the guard and entry, do, and exit functions specified in UML to the state transition diagrams of SRPS, a programming learning support environment for beginners, in order to improve expressiveness and design flexibility. Evaluation experiments conducted with 16 subjects confirmed that state transition diagrams with the expanded functions make it possible to design actions and states that could not be expressed previously, and that they can also handle advanced tasks. We also observed a tendency for learners to design while being conscious of branching and organizing actions, suggesting the possibility of encouraging designs that take into account the relationships and structure between actions. On the other hand, the expanded range of expression also revealed issues such as the increasing complexity of state transition diagrams and a decrease in readability. In the future, it will be necessary to consider new mechanisms to support the learning process, such as visualization support that makes it easier to organize and overview complex diagrams. |
