A Preliminary Study on Scoring Descriptive Questions Using Generative AI

(in English) In recent years, ICT-enhanced learning has been promoted in primary and secondary education under the GIGA School initiative. However, the use of ICT in school administration, which supports learning, has lagged behind. Scoring, which is a part of grade processing, is still done manually, placing a heavy burden on teachers. In this study, we used generative AI to score descriptive questions and compared the results with those of teachers. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups’ grades on essay questions that test knowledge, confirming the usefulness of scoring using generative AI. However, there was a discrepancy in the scoring results for descriptive questions that test thinking skills, indicating that scoring using generative AI still has some problems to be solved.
