This study investigated the effects of presenting metalinguistic knowledge of the target grammatical structures on cards (hereafter referred to as “metalinguistic explanation cards”) during peer-interaction activities involving a speech task. Thirty university students were assigned to one of three conditions: a group that provided feedback (FB) while consulting the metalinguistic explanation cards (Group A), a group that provided FB without consulting the metalinguistic explanation cards (Group B), and a group that received FB but did not provide FB themselves to peer (Group C). The study examined their acquisition of the past perfect and the past perfect subjunctive. The results showed that, although all three groups initially struggled to use the past perfect subjunctive correctly in the pretest, Group A demonstrated significant improvement in both the immediate and delayed posttests. Regarding the past perfect, Group B exhibited greater learning gains than the other groups. For Group C, a short-term improvement was observed for the past-perfect subjunctive, whereas no improvement was found for the past perfect. |
