Development and Evaluation of a Four-Limb External Force Estimation System for Bouldering Climbing

(in English) Bouldering route grades are often determined subjectively, which can lead to inconsistencies between the assigned grade and the actual difficulty of the route. Such inconsistencies may hinder skill development and increase the risk of injury. To address this issue, we have proposed a four-limb external force estimation system using a motion capture tool and a physics engine, aiming to support objective grade estimation based on climbing motion. In this study, the accuracy of the proposed system was evaluated using a jumping motion as a fundamental experiment. The vertical external force estimated by the proposed method was compared with the ground reaction force measured by a single-axis force plate. Sampling-rate differences were adjusted using linear interpolation, and the estimation accuracy was quantitatively evaluated using the root mean square error (RMSE), correlation coefficient, and coefficient of determination. The results showed that, although the error in estimating the absolute magnitude of external forces was large, a certain level of correlation was observed in the temporal variation trends. These findings indicate that, while the proposed system is not suitable for precise force measurement, it has potential as a feature extraction method for representing motion characteristics in bouldering grade estimation.
