Use of LLM Tutor Bots in Open Chat for Programming Education

(in English) With the development of generative AI technology using large language models (LLMs), systems that enable programming assistance through conversational interfaces are becoming widespread. However, most LLM-based chat systems involve closed conversations within individuals, leading to the individualization and opaqueness of programming learning processes. In this study, we constructed an open chat system where questions and answers to tutor bots are shared among instructors and students, and operated it in university programming exercise courses. As a result, during the eight-week operation period in the semester, only six questions were posted by students. A survey of students suggested that interacting with bots in an open chat environment may impose psychological burden. This paper presents the dialogue examples obtained, and discusses the effectiveness of educational guardrails through prompt engineering and future prospects.
