The present study introduced haptic feedback into a pseudo brain–computer interface (BCI) environment that simulates the control of a virtual robotic arm, and investigated its effect on reducing visual processing load during multitask execution in comparison with visual feedback. In the experiment, participants performed a robotic arm control task simultaneously with a visual counting task, while behavioral performance, subjective evaluations, and electroencephalographic (EEG) activity were recorded. The collected data were analyzed from both behavioral and neural perspectives. The results showed that, under high-difficulty conditions, the number of errors in the counting task was significantly reduced in the haptic feedback condition. In addition, EEG analysis revealed a significant increase in event-related desynchronization (ERD) over the sensorimotor cortex and a decrease in ERD over the visual cortex. No significant effects of the feedback modality were observed in the subjective evaluations. These findings suggest that haptic feedback reduces reliance on visual processing and contributes to the alleviation of visual load in multitask environments. |
