A Learning Reflection Map and LLM-Based Creation Support to Foster Self-Directed and Autonomous Learning

(in English) This study aims to promote autonomous and self-directed learning in higher education by developing a Learning Reflection Map Creation Support System that leverages a large language model (LLM). An analysis of a university course conducted in the 2024 academic year revealed that learners’ free-text reflections were insufficiently structured, making it difficult for them to objectively assess their own understanding. To address this issue, we propose a reflection activity grounded in metacognitive knowledge and develop a Learning Reflection Map that visually represents the relationships among keywords, difficulties/questions, and approaches related to the learning content. Furthermore, we implement a system in which an LLM generates concrete evaluations and formative feedback based on the maps created by learners.
