In the present study, the impressions of riding experience of an electric vehicle with virtually added engine sounds and vibrations were determined using semantic differential method. The experiment was conducted under 24 conditions using a system that could virtually generate engine sounds from 8 vehicle models in synchronization with accelerator pedal depression, with vibration equivalent to that of a real engine vehicle, exaggerated vibration that was approximately 6 dB stronger, and no vibration. Thirteen participants rated their impressions for the riding experience for each condition. The results showed that the impression space was spanned by dynamics, heaviness and luxury, Dynamics and heaviness were largely determined by the impressions of the engine sounds, and adding vibration enhanced the dynamics and heaviness. The heaviness was also important for the "nostalgia" and "novelty" of the riding experience, and it was found that a light engine sound evoked the novelty and a heavy engine sound evoked the nostalgia. Furthermore, as a magnitude of vibration enhanced, the dynamics and heaviness increased, suggesting a tendency toward a nostalgic driving experience. |
