Spline functions that are used for interpolation and smoothing of discrete data can give efficient data representations by treating knot positions as free variables, but finding the optimal knot positions is a difficult combinatorial optimization problem. A heuristic method using a cumulative distribution function (CDF) of differential features of input data can efficiently determine the spline knot placement. However, when the input data contains noise, nearly equally spaced knot positions are obtained since the difference calculation amplifies the noise. In this study, we propose to use spline smoothing before the difference calculation for noisy input data. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method with specific smoothing parameters gives better representations of the noise-free true data with fewer knots compared to the conventional method. |
