A Method of Generating Surprising Information with Generative AI for Promoting Information Exploration and Its Evaluation

(in English) Web-based investigative learning is an important activity for knowledge acquisition. Due to its high cognitive load, however, various forms of cognitive support have been explored. In addition to this challenge, as information exploration deepens, learners’ interest and curiosity tend to decline, leading to a reduction in engagement that is essential for sustained and in-depth information exploration. To address this issue, this study proposes a method for generating and presenting surprising information that contradicts learners’ existing knowledge, with the aim of promoting engagement and deepening information exploration. The results of a case study suggest that the proposed method strongly stimulates learners’ motivation to exploration. reactivates diminished engagement, and significantly contributes to deepening their information exploration.
