To Depend, or to Defend: That Is the Question

(in English) McLuhan said that medium is part of our bodies, and extension of ourselves. Our bodies change according to the media we use. If the change is favorable, we may "depend" on the media. However, if it is unfavorable, we need to "defend". Whether or not we approve of this change in our bodies brought about by technology depends on our values. As one of these values, I focus on the difference between classical artifacts and cognitive artifacts, and show that we need to be cautious about the use of cognitive artifacts. Then, I consider whether we should "depend" or "defend" by the temptation of e-media in modern times, and explore the bifurcation point between "depend" and "defend". I also discuss the possibility of developing this process into information ethics education.
