Control of Ground Gateway Antennas for Tracking Aerial UAVs Considering Position-Information Transmission Delay in Temporary UAV Wireless Relay Systems

(in English) In case of large-scale disasters such as major earthquakes, a system has been proposed to establish service areas in wide regions where mobile communication has been disrupted. This is achieved using wireless relay equipment mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying at altitudes above 1,000 meters. Typically, the UAV’s wireless relay communicates with a ground gateway (ground GW) via a feeder link and with terrestrial mobile terminals via a service link. In the feeder link, the use of high-gain narrow-beam antennas is envisaged, and stable communication between the UAV and the ground GW requires precise control of the antenna’s pointing direction, particularly on the ground GW side. We previously proposed a tracking control scheme based on constant angular velocity ON/OFF control and linear prediction. In practice, however, the position information suffers delays due to processing, wireless transmission, and reception-side computation, which can increase tracking angle errors. In this paper, assuming a known and constant delay, we propose a ground GW antenna control method that estimates the UAV position at the reception time and tracks the UAV accordingly, and we evaluate its effectiveness through simulations.
