This research paper provides a trilateral linguistic analysis of youth slang and refusal expressions across Japanese, English, and Chinese, aiming to bridge the gap in existing literature which typically only compares two of these languages at a time. We collected youth slang from 31 Japanese speakers, 15 English speakers, and 9 Chinese speakers in their 20s and classified the slang according to how they were constructed. We found that "abbreviation" and "revival" were the most dominant word-formation patterns. In a second part, we provided refusal scenes among young people from a TV series and asked native speakers for their responses. We sorted the interactions into categories of refusal type, finding, among other results, that slang is commonly used to mitigate tension associated with refusals directed at friends. |
