Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, the proliferation of flat-panel displays has led to an increase in smooth operating surfaces, creating a demand for intuitive information presentation technologies in environments where visual information is difficult to acquire. This study proposes a handheld device that converts image luminance information into tactile stimuli in real-time.
While conventional methods have explored converting luminance into height, challenges such as increased device size and response latency have persisted. To address these issues, we developed a compact and high-speed tactile interface by applying an illusory phenomenon in which horizontal skin deformation is perceived as vertical pressure.
Experimental evaluations using a $3 times 3$ micro-motor array demonstrated that the system latency was suppressed to approximately $22.7~mathrm{ms}$, and the generated pseudo-pressure exhibited logarithmic characteristics following the Weber-Fechner law. Furthermore, geometric shape identification experiments revealed perceptual characteristics where the easily recognizable line width varies depending on the orientation of the presented lines. The results also confirmed that geometric shapes can be identified through active exploration, even with a low-resolution $3 times 3$ array.
