Achieving both text input and gesture expression in VR space is an important challenge. Existing methods lack a sense of touch, cause physical fatigue, and impose operational limitations. Conventional wearable devices also face trade-offs, such as a lack of physical tactile sensation, physical fatigue, and limitations on physical expression. In this study, we propose a grip-type haptic device called "HandyKey4VR" that solves these issues. This device features five unique touch-sensor-integrated key switches on each side (10 in total) that detect three states of each finger: contact, press, and release. This enables text input with a typing feel and gesture expression in any position. Furthermore, decoding processing using an N-gram language model enables low-learning-cost input using only 10 key switches, utilizing QWERTY fingering. Evaluation experiments showed that the average reaction time for gesture input was 1357.9 ms, significantly shorter than with a standard controller, and the text input speed was 10.63 WPM, comparable to existing methods. The SUS score was 71.35, which is considered "good," confirming its effectiveness as a means of smooth communication in virtual space. |
