[Short Paper] A Fundamental Study on the Effects of Display Resolution and Visual Acuity on Occlusion Countermeasures in Video Games

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In third-person perspective video games, occlusion frequently reduces the visibility of the player avatar. A common countermeasure is to render occluding objects semi-transparent; however, some translucency algorithms are susceptible to variations in screen resolution and viewer visual acuity. This study conducted a subjective evaluation experiment to compare three techniques: alpha blending, Bayer dithering, and blue-noise dithering. The results show that alpha blending provides stable evaluations independent of screen resolution and visual acuity, whereas dithering techniques are more sensitive to these factors. In particular, blue-noise dithering was found to be potentially effective for viewers with lower visual acuity.
